5 Fun Dry Ice Experiments for Kids
In addition to its many uses for adults, dry ice is also a fun and exciting material for kids! Particularly for science experiments, dry ice is an excellent tool for illustrating scientific processes and having fun while learning. With parental supervision, kids can try these five fun dry ice experiments at home!
Disappearing Ice
Place a regular ice cube and a cube of dry ice side by side on separate plates for one hour or more, and return to find that the dry ice has mysteriously disappeared! Unlike the regular ice cube, the dry ice will disappear without a trace of water.
Smokey Cloud Water
Place a piece of dry ice in warm water and watch as the dry ice transforms into a cloud of CO2 and water vapor. With the proper safety precautions, this cloud is safe for you to touch, just be sure to not touch the dry ice. Eventually the dry ice will cool the water, and the cloud or smoking effect may lose its shape.
Smoke Bubbles
Combine warm water and add a few drops of liquid dish soap in a tall glass or cylinder. Carefully place the dry ice into the soapy water using gloves or tongs as an added safety measure. With the liquid dish soap in the mix, the soap in the water traps the CO2 and water vapor to form a bubble. For an added dose of fun to your experiment, add some food coloring to the water for colorful bubbles in the mix. You can also add a neon glow stick into the water to achieve the perfect spooky look for a Halloween party.
Floating Dry Ice Bubble
Use approximately an inch of warm water to cover the bottom of a large container or aquarium. Add a few pieces of dry ice using tongs. During this process, the dry ice will appear to be smoking as it transforms into a combination of CO2 and water vapor. You can then start blowing a bubbles into the container or aquarium using a bubble wand and a bottle of bubbles. You may notice that the bubbles will appear to be floating in midair inside of the container. However, these bubbles are actually floating on CO2.
Bubbly Beverages
Make your own bubbly beverage by filling a bowl or pitcher with your juice of choice, then add a few pieces of dry ice using tongs. As your drink begins to bubble, the juice will become carbonated by the dry ice, taking the form of a sparkling drink.
