Why Dry Ice is the Perfect Addition to Your Cooler
If you are away from a refrigerator and you need to keep perishable items cold, dry ice could be the perfect solution for your cooler. Because of its efficiency in keeping items cold, dry ice is a perfect addition to your cooler during hot summer months. Consider the many reasons why dry ice is a great solution for your cooler.
Advantages of Dry Ice
There are many advantages to using dry ice when you do not have access to a freezer. The first advantage is that dry ice is colder than ice made from water, as it is made from carbon dioxide gas and the temperature typically hovers around -109 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice made from water is usually about 32 degrees Fahrenheit. With its much colder temperature, it’s very effective for keeping the contents of your cooler cold for prolonged periods of time. In addition to its coldness, dry ice won’t leave and leave you with the job of cleaning up a big puddle of water. As dry ice slowly warms up, it turns into a gas which is why many people use it to provide a smoky or spooky effect for Halloween. The gas is better for your belongings and food products because there is no water to saturate your items and make them soggy or unusable.
Making the Most of Dry Ice for Your Food
To get the most use out of dry ice, especially while camping, wrap a few layers of newspaper around the ice and place that on top of the food. At that point, place regular ice made from water under the food. This technique will help the dry ice to last even longer, especially if you ensure that it doesn’t come in contact with the regular ice. If your cooler isn’t completely full, use more newspaper to fill those spaces — it also helps slow down the rate that the dry ice sublimates, or turns to gas.
