Ways to Use Dry Ice This Summer
Dry ice is a really cool substance with a ton of uses, from keeping your food safe when the power goes out to creating some spine-tingling Halloween effects to offering an exciting and fun science class. Dry ice also has a lot of practical uses, many of which you should consider trying out this summer.
Flash Freezing
If you want to preserve some of the seasonal produce from your garden by freezing it, dry ice can help. Freezing produce in a traditional freezer can leave it a little wilted since it takes time to freeze. If instead you pack it in dry ice, it will be totally frozen and preserved in all its delicious glory in under an hour.
Smelling Experience
Smell is an integral part of the eating experience (which you know if you’ve ever tried to enjoy your favorite food with a stuffed-up nose). Because of this, many restaurants are integrating particular smells into their eating experiences. You can mimic this at home with dry ice and essential oils.
Cold Cooking
Some seafood varieties can actually be “cooked” by searing them with coldness, exposing them to temperatures of -109 degrees to be exact. This can be achieved with dry ice. This could be a really cool cooking experiment to try out this summer, or you could save it to surprise your guests at a summer cookout.
Keeping Cool
If you’re traveling, hiking, or camping this summer, consider swapping your normal frozen water ice for some dry ice in your cooler. Dry ice tends to work as well if not better while being much lighter. Plus, when it’s gone you’re left with nothing – no nasty wet cooler to drain and clean.
Deterring Mosquitos
And finally, the most exciting and world-changing use for dry ice this summer is deterring mosquitos. Those buzzing, biting pests are everywhere, and aside from being annoying they can carry dangerous diseases. Mosquitos are insects that find prey to bite by being attracted to the CO2 given off by their bodies. If you add dry ice to your ultraviolet mosquito traps, the CO2 that sublimates into the air will attract the mosquitos and lure them to their doom in the traps. Always remember to use gloves when handling dry ice and keep it well away from children and pets.
