Using Dry Ice to Remove Asphalt or Vinyl Floor Tiles
Since dry ice is icy, you can use it to freeze the old tiles in your home to remove them quickly. The purpose is to shrink the tiles slightly. The cold temperature will weaken the glue between the tiles and the floor. Perform the following steps to eliminate your asphalt or vinyl floor tiles using dry ice.
Don’t Neglect Safety!
Dry ice has countless uses, and regardless of the service, handling it correctly is vital for your safety. Prolonged contact with dry ice will freeze the cells and burn your skin. Dry ice is primarily frozen carbon dioxide gas, which can poison the air if left to purify. Before handling dry ice, wear protective gear such as a pair of goggles, leather gloves, and a gas mask. Open any ventilation to make sure there is a constant circulation of fresh air.
Applying the Dry Ice
Take a sheet of waxed paper that is an inch longer and wider than a single tile and slightly place it on one of the tiles you want to remove. The waxed paper should be overhanging the surrounding tiles. While wearing your protective clothing, use a pair of tongs to apply the dry ice on top of the waxed sheet and cover it with a towel to lessen the sublimation. Wait a couple of minutes or until you hear the tile coming loose.
Repeat Until Termination
As you pull off the edge of the waxed paper, position your dry ice to a second tile. When the second tile frosts, begin removing the loosened first tile. Use a scraper, flathead screwdriver, or putty knife to pull out the loosened tile effortlessly. Another alternative is lifting the tile with your fingertips. If the tile isn’t loose enough, you can continuously slightly tap the tile with a hammer. Use the pair of tongs to transfer the removed tile to a well-ventilated area to allow any dry ice stuck to the tile to escape to the exterior freely. Keep in mind that it will attach itself again if the tile is left on the floor.
