How Dry Ice Can Assist in the Fight Against Rats

How Dry Ice Can Assist in the Fight Against Rats

You’d be surprised at how dry ice has come onto the scene to help fight back against rats.

The fight between humans and home pests is an ancient battle. A lot of major cities all across the country have seen an alarming rise in rodent population over the years. Rats have always been a pain that we try to keep out of our homes and buildings, and they can carry diseases and wreak havoc on your building’s structural makeup. However, there are solutions. Read on to learn how dry ice has come onto the scene to help fight back against rats.

The Rise of the Rats

As cities become more prominent and more people live in them, an ever-increasing surge of complaints from city folk have complained about rats. Rats have been growing in population to the point that there seem to be just as many rats as there are squirrels. This is where a solution needs to be made.

Dry Ice to the Rescue

While traditional rat poison seems like the natural choice, it isn’t always ideal. Like birds of prey, other species can be at risk of eating any rats that might have been poisoned. However, with dry ice, victory can be achieved. By placing dry ice pellets into rat burrows and burying the entrance holes, you can suffocate rats in a non-toxic way. When the dry ice (a solid carbon dioxide) sublimates (turned into gas), the rats will inhale this and then fall into a very deep sleep. The number of burrows will then decrease, and the issue is well on its way to being solved.

The EPA’s Role

The EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, has spoken out in 2016 about this extermination practice. Dry ice has not registered as a legal rodenticide within federal laws. Despite the various benefits that dry ice has over normal rodenticide, using dry ice in this way was not allowed back then. Yet, people demanded dry ice be approved as long as rats were still around.

Dry ice is now allowed to be used by city workers through a manufacturer known as Bell Laboratories. Major cities can safely use this effective method to keep rats away from people’s homes and businesses. However, over-the-counter dry ice is not legal for ordinary civilians to use. Even so, it is still a massive player for shipping food, cleaning, education uses, and entertainment today.
