April Fools’ Day Pranks and Tricks with Dry Ice
Before we even get into this one, we feel like we should start with a safety warning. As cool and fun as dry ice can be for recreational purposes, it can be equally dangerous. Dry ice is a staggering -109°F — that’s enough to give you frostbite simply by touching it with bare skin. If you’re going to have fun with dry ice, make sure you read up on proper safety techniques before you do! Now, back to your regularly scheduled blogging.
April Fools’ Day Pranks with Dry Ice!
There’s no reason to wait for Halloween to have some fun with dry ice! With our favorite holiday over half a year away, let’s see if we can find some tricky ways to play with dry ice for April Fools’ Day pranks.
- A New Kind of Trick Candle: Place a small house candle in a container like a bowl or glass — something taller than the candle itself. Carefully pour some crushed dry ice around the candle, and you’ll see the flame go out within a couple seconds. Once the dry ice has totally sublimated (evaporated), try to have a friend re-light the candle. They won’t be able to because the carbon dioxide gas resulting from sublimation will be trapped at the top of the candle, and fire needs oxygen to survive. If you blow into the top of the glass, you’ll push the CO2 out, allowing you to light the candle.
- April Fools’ with a Bang: Fill a ziplock bag with a few chunks of dry ice and a little bit of warm water, seal it so it’s completely airtight, and hide it somewhere sneaky. As the dry ice sublimates, CO2 will expand, pressurizing the bag. When the pressure becomes enough, the ziplock will POP open, creating an impressively loud “bang!”
Remember, safety always comes first with dry ice AND with pranks. We love April Fools’ Day pranks as much as the next guy, but if your friends and family aren’t the type to enjoy a good prank or two, let ‘em be. Pranks are only fun if they’re fun for everyone. That being said — happy pranking!
