Purchase the Right Amount
Since dry ice turns into gas as it melts, it’s important to purchase your dry ice as close to the party start time as possible. You should also keep in mind that it will disappear as it melts, so buying more than you need is better than purchasing too little and losing it before the first guest arrives. As a rule of thumb, keep in mind that five pounds of dry ice will sublimate in 24 hours.
Safety First
Dry ice is incredibly dangerous because of its cold temperature, so you should always pay close attention as you are handling it. Never store it in an airtight place like a freezer or cooler, as the pressure of the gas as it melts can cause an explosion. Place dry ice in an insulated or Styrofoam cooler with the lid slightly cracked to allow gas out. If you want to add some extra insulation to your dry ice, you can wrap it in a few sheets of newspaper or some paper towels. Never use dry ice in areas that are not properly ventilated, as you could get very sick from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Make Fog!
One of the main reasons people purchase Halloween dry ice is to make fog in their yard. Place the dry ice in a liquid and it will start to smoke right away. If you use warm water, it will make more fog but dissipate quickly. For a steady effect, use cold water.
